Emily + Greg: Metro Detroit Wedding Photographer

As a second shooter your main job is to back up the main photographer… take candid shots, lug gear, adjust veils and dresses, hold grandma’s purse, etc. For tips on how to be a great second shooter, see the post here. I love being able to help out my friends in the industry. I really believe we are stronger together. Yes, it’s an extremely competitive industry but we have to come together as artists and respect each other and better the industry as a whole. We can’t let the uncle bob’s take over! We are better than that as creatives. Ok, that’s my soapbox speech for today…

On New Years Eve, I had the pleasure of working with Joe from Nicoloff Photography. We documented Emily and Greg’s beautiful winter wedding at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, MI. Emily is one of the most organized people I’ve met. I loved how she kept everything in order and wore fierce heels in the process. Greg is so kind and patient. I absolutely adore them together.

Emily had her bridesmaids, friends and family sign the bottom of her wedding heels. I love this idea and mentally stored it in the back of my mind for my own wedding. What a great keepsake for a shoe lover!

I think enough people in the social media world know by now… but I wanted to let them tell everyone people in person first….

My little brother is engaged! I was shooting a wedding when I found out and I couldn’t be more happy for him and Emily. These two are completely meant for each other. They are really like peas and carrots. Although I’m sure they both dislike those vegetables equally. Here’s a few shots I took of them while they were still in college. I needed models. And I paid in beer. A match made in heaven.

My brother is pretty used me sticking a camera in his face at random moments. He even knows a thing or two about shutter speed. It’s in the genes.

And yes, it’s strange to see your little brother grow up, graduate college and get a grown-up job. But it’s really cute too! OK, I’m done being the crazy older sister… for now.

Believe In Your Imagination

March 18th, 2012

TweetI’ll admit was unsure about going to see Jasmine Star. I wasn’t sure she’d live up to my imagination of her. Does that sound stalker-ish? I’m sure it does. Usually find reading someones blog and then actually meeting them are two different things. Call me a skeptic, but I’ve found it true in the past. [...]

I’ll admit was unsure about going to see Jasmine Star. I wasn’t sure she’d live up to my imagination of her. Does that sound stalker-ish? I’m sure it does. Usually find reading someones blog and then actually meeting them are two different things. Call me a skeptic, but I’ve found it true in the past.

All of these feelings when out the window when I heard Jasmine speak. She is magical. No really, this girl is unbelievable in person. First of all, she’s gorgeous (total girl jealously there) and she is one of the best speakers I’ve ever seen. She lived up to every single expectation I had and more.

The two main lessons I learned from Jasmine are:

1. Determination. Jasmine is the most determined photographer I’ve ever seen. You can see it in her face and the way she speaks so passionately about her work. She has a definite plan and purpose. She takes her “crazy ideas” and puts them into action. She believes in her imagination, no matter how grand the idea.

2. We are better together. As photographers sometimes we can get carried away with “me.” My brand, my style, my copyright, etc… But the real objective of our industry is to bring people together. We photograph emotions. We need to come together as professionals and help make each other better. We need to raise the bar and be better to each other. I’ve already met a ton of people from the trip and I can’t wait to connect with them! I can’t thank Jasmine enough for the inspiration and genuine open discussion that stared from theFix.

Lastly, talk about determination. I know it’s not a “pretty” picture but look at the determination on her face. I love it. She rocks my world!
