I thought I could do a typical end of year post and post my best technical shots, but this year I decided on something different…

I am privileged to meet not only great couples, but their amazing families every year. So, I thought I’d share some of my favorite emotional, funny, passionate and overall great moments as a photographer last year.

To start, Jen and Doug. Both of their mothers passed away from cancer and I couldn’t even imagine growing up without my mom. (oh here come the tears) Jen used a piece of her mothers wedding dress as the flower on her dress, given to her by her grandma. They had a special memory table at the reception filled with pictures and memories. It was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.

Abbey and Ryan had a beautiful backyard wedding at their home in May. They even made TheKnot! And have a baby on the way. It doesn’t get much better!

Chelsea and Andrew were married in his uncle’s church, St. Andrew’s Cathedral so beautiful!

Volk-129

Jessica and Andy. Andy proposed using his iphone. How tech savy! No, not over the phone, haha. I know what everyone is thinking. He took a picture of the ring box and texted Jessica to come downstairs. Then he got down on one knee. Adorbs! This shot reminds them of that day.

Swett-305

They also had this adorable little man at the wedding. He’s three, can you tell?!

Swett-296

I have never met such a strong and beautiful family then I did at Jill and Matt’s wedding. These candid moments during family formals are the best!

LaCross-91

LaCross-84

I also loved this family shot of the dance floor!

LaCross-494

Jill’s dad’s band jamed out the entire reception. Great music and lighting for the whole show!

LaCross-509

Ahhh, Bridget and Mike! I love these two kids so much!! I say kids because I knew Bridget when she was about 10 and I would go over to hang out with her older sister, Diana who went to high school with me. Hours of dancing to Britney Spears in their basement and doing each others hair… oh memories! These were during family formals with Bridget and Diana; I love the way they laugh!

Chinneck-81

Bridget’s mom is a riot! But always willing to help with last minute dress fixes.

Chinneck-63

Bridget’s dad is also amazing and hilarious. I just love the love between this family.

Chinneck-104

Mike’s parents cracked me up as well. We got to the church to find them dressed and ready to go, calmly reading the newspaper. No biggie.

Chinneck-109

But seriously, when these two look at each other, it’s electric….

Chinneck-342

Kind of how Bridget’s dad looked at her mom during the ceremony. Adoring love. It doesn’t get much better.

Chinneck-180

OOOh Beth and Charlie!!!! It’s hard to love a couple as much as I love them. We met in college and it was an amazing honor (and a little nerve wracking) for me to photograph their wedding. My assistant snapped this beautiful shot of them walking out of the ceremony together. Cute-ness to the max.Doren-221

Also, standing up the the wedding was my good friend, Carolyn and she wasn’t always obeying the rules of posing!

Doren-388

Oh, hey! we got married toady, no biggs!

Doren-401

Possibly the best cake topper I’ve ever seen!

Doren-330

I think they get their sense of humor from their parents!

Doren-466

This is Charlie’s mom, Diane. She is the nicest woman I have ever met. I love her so!

Doren-515

Beth’s mom gave a beautiful toast and I was tearing up behind the camera. I admit it, I’m a sap.

Doren-458

John and Diana had a beautiful wedding in Grand Haven. Diana’s dad was able to walk her down the aisle and pose for some adorable family photos.

Kasza-112

I also loved the way Dian and John did their vows. They said them together in unison. Words that they wrote themselves. It was breathtaking.

Kasza-171

This guy was hitting the dance floor like nobody’s business!

Kasza-399

Theresa and Nick. Love, love, love every minute of them. When a couple drives and hour in a snow storm to meet with you, that’s a true bond. They are hilarious and now married, like whoa!

Mullane-408

Did that just happen?! Also, best bridal party collage of all time!

Mullane-678

They know how to boogie too!

Mullane-471

This groomsman came to party…

Mullane-398

Loved their photobooth.

Mullane Photobooth-98

Then, I was ambushed at the end of the night! Because everyone knows I so love having my picture taken… but for them, anything!

Mullane Photobooth-176

At Chris and Emily’s wedding, things got funky when Emily started DJing like a pro!

Kowalczk-450

Steve and Sam’s wedding was epic, mostly because of Steve- who told me afterward that he was now considering male modeling… (j/k!)

Comer-287

However, I think Sam might have a better shot. I loved these intimate moments my assistant captured with Sam ans her sister.

So, so much love to all my beautiful, amazing couples and their families. Thank you for making 2012 another great year!

It’s difficult to function completely without the help of others. I’m not the kind of person who really likes to ask for help. Ever. Before I met Brady, I was so intend on being independent I was making more work for myself. Now, instead of complaining about having to drag the laundry basket up the stairs, I simply ask,”Honey will you bring the laundry basket up the stairs for me? I can’t see over it.” Yes, I always get a jabbing comment about my short legs or “stubs” as Brady calls them. But he does it. I ask for help and I get it. Once I figured out this amazing formula, it became easier for me to reach out for help.

This brings me to a special post on the programs I use to make my life easier. I like simple. It’s so much better for my sanity. Hopefully these will help you too!

SmugMug: This beautiful little site runs my proofing gallery. However, it does a lot more than that. It sends out orders for me, lets me offer coupons and discount codes and even acts as a backup for past events. The customer service is unbelievable. I emailed them once at midnight, just hoping to hear back the next morning, it wasn’t urgent. They replied in 3 minutes! At midnight! I love the SmugMug Support Heros.

Color Inc: Ok, Color Inc is my jam! I love them. I’ve loved them since they first started out. My colleague from GVSU works there, so I’m a little biased but they are my local print lab love. I like to support local places as much as possible, and Color Inc makes that easy. The have online customer service and extremely fast turn around times. I use them for pretty much all my prints.

Black River Imaging: I recently discovered this lab for albums. They do such amazing quality work and their ordering system, Cascade, is so easy to use, it takes all the headache out of ordering. I also like that they offer the option for faux leather in different colors.

SWAT: Ok, stop designing albums right now and go to this website. It’s the best thing I’ve ever used! SWAT is the brain child of the guys who created KISS albums. It is the only design software you will ever need. It will auto fill a layout for you, let you email a private viewing link to your clients and have them make corrections right on the page and send back for approval. I love it. You can swap out images very easily and download the layout to any lab. Best thing.. it’s FREE!

Tofurious Blog Theme: I get a lot of questions about how I make my blog look the way it does. Here’s a confession: I don’t do it alone. I have help. Mostly the amazing Heather at LoveBugs Photography. She is the genius behind making my blog work and look the way it does. The actual template for my blog comes from Tofurious, aka Lawrence Chan a marketing guru in his own right. Check out his site, it’s packed with useful info for photographers.

And because every post is better with a picture… here’s a preview from a post I’m writing about my work as a second shooter.

I’m bringing back my Love It or Leave It series for fun.

  • Bahamas. I’m going in 30 days. SO Excited!
  • Brady and I are beginning to look for a house. We are ready to buy, and I’ll keep you updated on the progress.
  • Ballroom dancing. Brady and I had our first class last night. We were the youngest people in the class by at least 30 years. Even though we felt a bit silly, I really liked it. I’m not so sure Brady was convinced even though it was his idea. However, one of the ladies came up to use at the end and congratulated us for being the youngest ones there and for making an effort. So.. Go Us!

  • I know I shouldn’t complain, but the weather in Michigan has been unusually warm. And by warm I mean no snow. I’m extremely afraid we will have some kind of snow apocalypse and be snowed in for days. Right before we leave for the Bahamas. Then, my vacation will be spent in the Detroit Airport. Update: Yes, we did get snow this morning, but not enough to be considered apocalyptic.
  • I feel slightly like I’m in a creative rut lately. In some kind of funk. I can’t figure out what it is. I’m going to try shooting film to get out of it. Shooting film in the middle of winter. I may be crazy.
  • Speaking of my Bahamas trip, I also need to lose about 500 lbs before I leave. I’m sure this won’t be a problem at all….
