I’ve wrote about many wedding planning tips and tricks is these posts below, but I thought it was time for another!

Five Ways to Personalize Your Wedding

Telling Your Wedding Color Story (more on this coming soon as well!)

Why Your Engagement Session is Important

The Benefits of having a First Look

Five Wedding Day Beauty Tips

Here are a few things I want all my couples and perspective clients to understand:

1. We Need Time. Ever work under an impossible deadline? That’s how we feel at most weddings when we are not given enough time to photograph. We need to photograph details inside and out, the ceremony, candid moments, family photos, bridal party and most importantly, the couple! This cannot be accomplished if we feel rushed and stressed. Can you perform at your job when you’re under pressure? Now, I’m not saying a healthy amount of pressure and stress isn’t part of our job (or any job really) but the more undo stress you put on your photographer, the less time you give them.. the less images and the less creativity you will get out of them.

2. We Need A Meal Break. Most of my weddings are at least 8 hours long. There is no way I can go without a break of some kind. Would you still work at your job is they took away your lunch hour? My “down time” is still busy. Usually during the dinner, I am backing up images and loading others in for a same day slideshow.

3. We Work More Than One Day A Week. If I could shoot a wedding on Saturday and relax the rest of the week, my life would be a breeze. Photographers usually spend the work week editing, designing albums, answering emails, blogging and other random office tasks. We are our own secretary, file clerk, researcher, CFO, CEO, owner and designer. I have no office help. Some do on a part time basis but running a business with even two people is a lot of work.

4. We Are Not Mind Readers. I am a firm believer in solid, constant communication with my clients. I work out a timeline with them before their wedding. I ask probing questions to make sure I’m telling their complete story. Is your bouquet wrapped in grandmas lace? Special jewelry from an aunt? Grooms cufflinks have an engraving, you want a funny shot with all your college friends? You need to let your photographer know. I want to be able to capture every little detail and every important person in your life.

5. We Want To Keep Shooting You. Ok, actually what I mean is we want you in our lives even after your wedding is over. We want you to be out clients for life! We want to be the one to take pictures of your first baby, we want to photograph your sister’s wedding, your new puppy, your child’s first communion, your anniversary, your second baby, etc… It’s not about money (most photographers offer bonuses for repeat or referral customers, myself included!) we want to document every part of your life because, to us your story is interesting and beautiful. We want to build a strong connection with our clients because it makes our images stronger and we feel emotionally connected to our work and our amazing clients!

I hope this helps you decide on your wedding photographer. Hire a photographer that takes your breath away! And because every post is better with a picture…

A Second Look at First Looks

I like to re-post about this topic every year to show how amazing first looks can be. I’ve posted before on first looks here and here but I think it’s time for a refresher.

What is a First Look? A first look is when a couple sees each other before the ceremony. Gasp! This can’t be?! But yes, it’s probably the best advice I can offer to my clients on their wedding day.

Why do a First Look? 1. It saves time and 2. It’s time to relax as a couple. I highly recommend them to my couples because of the raw, beautiful emotion I’m able to capture. In my opinion, these are the best shots of the day!

In addition, a first look saves time. Say your ceremony is at 4:30 and reception immediately following at 5, with a cocktail hour from 5-6pm. Dinner is served at 6pm. When do you have time for pictures? You will be stressed and rushed the whole day. I simply want my brides to be relaxed and calm all day. Plus, this way you and your bridal party don’t have to miss cocktail hour!

Below are some of my favorite first look moments. I’m passionate about talking with my clients and letting them know their options. A wedding day offers just a few precious hours, so maximizing time together, with family and guests seems to make sense. And, at the same time letting your photographer document your candid love.

It also gives my assistant time to take a few solo shots of your lovely groom. Abbey and Ryan’s first look was so natural and beautiful.

Maybe you don’t want to actually see each other, but you want a quiet moment to relax. Blindfolding your groom is also a great option! Steve and Samantha had a few moments to themselves right before the ceremony to calm their nerves.

She’s quiet and patient. He’s shy and funny. They are best friends. They’ve been together through everything and more to come. I want to keep them in my pocket. I want to bottle their love and open it when I need proof. Proof that love like Donna and Adam’s still exists. Their love is so real, pure and inspires me to not only be a better photographer but a better person. That is powerful stuff. I don’t care if it seems corny. It’s the truth.

Donna and Adam…they are so many words I could write, but all I can say is thank you. Thank you for allowing me to document and follow your love story. From your engagement images to your wedding day, I felt so welcomed. Much love and appreciation…

Ok, I love black and whites, I just can’t stop myself. After the ceremony, we went to the riverfront downtown Grand Rapids and got in a few shots before the rain started.

I actually kind of like rainy days. Not complete downpours but just a little sprinkle. The sky looks amazing and the light is dewy and perfect. Plus, it’s a perfect time for a cute umbrella shot.

Donna is pure perfection and beauty. We headed down the street to a building with a large overhang and let the rain fall and create great natural light to shoot with.

Their reception was held at San Chez and I loved every DIY detail Donna and Adam worked so hard on.

Ok, not to toot my own horn, but I think my photos look really good on a cake. It was such a clever idea and total surprise.

Connected. Just one word I would use to describe Jenny and Paul. They are friends first and share an amazing love together. Paul is funny, organized and outgoing. Jenny is quiet, kind and loving. When we first met to shoot their engagement session downtown Detroit, I was instantly was drawn to their chemistry. Together they are a terrific pair, and I was so honored to capture their wedding day.

It was a bright day at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, MI. The August heat was gone and I was blessed with beautiful window light to shoot all the details.

Jenny and Paul chose to do a first look which made their wedding day go so much smoother. And made for great reaction images.

So, the way to make your photographer do a happy dance is have your ceremony in a location like this. All windows and natural light. I was in love.

We headed outside after the ceremony just as the sun was setting to capture bridal party images. I love me some natural sunshine!

This shot to me perfectly describes Jenny and Paul. He will do anything for her, even help with her shoes.  I really love this candid moment.

Jenny did a beautiful job putting together the pink and pistachio color scheme that worked beautifully with the Royal Park’s theme and elegance.

This was the most amazing cake I have ever eaten in my life. Ever. Hands down. I am so positive! haha, Sweet & Savory bakery made my taste buds melt.

Because Paul’s family is from London, each table was named after a Detroit landmark to aquatint them with the city. Every guest had a group of landmarks, like the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) above. This theme corresponded with their engagement images as we went to all the historical landmarks in the Downtown Detroit. A great way to welcome out of town guests.

This is Jenny’s little brother Max. As I got to know him throughout the day, I discovered how close they were and that he is pretty much the best brother a girl could ask for.

I am so delighted to bring you all the beauty that was Amber and Tyler’s Grand Rapids wedding!

It was a hot day and there was a buzz of excitement at St. Paul the Apostle  as Amber sat directly on the other side of the wall from Tyler and his groomsmen. It was calm and relaxed, and I love a relaxed wedding day with perfect planning.

Amber and Tyler chose to do a first look inside the church to stay out of the heat. I loved the look of excitement in their eyes, they were all giddy over each other. Love!

Amber’s styling was classic and simple. She reminded me of a movie star from the 40′s.

The toasts may have been the funniest I’ve heard in a long time. Guests were laughing till they cried.
