The Best Feeling in the World, (for a photographer)

April 25th, 2012

I watched the rain cascade down the windows and make puddles on the cement. When dreary weather would normally make me feel tired and defeated, I sat a little higher knowing that my day just turned around. I sat in the quiet moment, wanting to call my mom and text Brady but I waited just a minute longer to absorb it all. To take it in. To sit in silence and think. Think about what the day would be like. Where the sun would be in the sky. How the black and whites would look. What favorite image I’d have printed for my studio walls… but mostly what connections I’d make, the feeling I’d get when the dj kicks on the first track with a lot of bass and my feet hurt just enough to dance a little… then relaxing on the couch the next day looking at my images.

This is what I feel when I get that call or email that a client wants to book me. That they trust my skills and personality enough to chose me. It’s like being picked first in gym class. (And I never was) so basically it’s the best feeling in the world. Is this a tad over dramatic? Yes. But it’s how I feel. It’s exhilarating and I love every minute of it. Also, I’m a total dork. But I’m sure everyone knew this. I’m just going to own it, because I’m all about being real!

And because every post is better with a picture (otherwise why would people read, right?!) here is a sample for a possible Art Prize entry I’m working on.

Tuesday Shoeday: My Cowboy Boots

April 24th, 2012

The boots have been scouted… and will soon be purchased (after I save up a bit more).

At first I really thought my feet were not meant for these boots. I couldn’t find them in a wide with. I’ve always had wide Italian feet, not good for cowboy boots. After a lot of looking I was happy to find them in an 8 wide. Which is crazy because I usually wear a 6 or 7 but I was told you usually have to go up a size in cowboy boots. Soon they will be mine..

Artists Who Inspire: Jose Villa

April 20th, 2012

There are few people the world that can make film look like butter on hot toast. So yummy, smooth and creamy that the image melts your heart and senses because it’s that good.  No, it’s better than good. It’s refreshing… powerful. Like a first kiss from a secret crush.

Everything. Every single thing that Jose Villa does is breathtaking. Even with an iphone. He shoots all film, with various high end cameras (like the hasselblad) mostly with Fuiji film. I brought along a similar film type for an engagement shoot and am excited to see the results. I expect them to look nothing close to this.

His natural light work inspires me like no one else. You need to visit his blog and just browse for hours. You won’t be able to stop!

Artists Who Inspire: Margaret Bourke-White

April 6th, 2012

It was may fifth grade book report and it was a big deal. My first presentation in front of the whole class, and my mom bought me a new dress for the occasion. I had my poster board covered in rubber cement, because only amateurs used glue sticks. And I was a professional. I’d racked up quite a few hours with my re-loadable Barbie film camera (yes an image of Barbie appeared in the corner of every image) and photographed many Barbie weddings complete with homemade marshmallow cakes. (My microwave skills were exceptional for a ten year old). I was so going to rock this book report!

The topic was someone we admire. At first I thought about my mom, but since no books have been published on her (not yet at least) I had to choose someone else. Enter this image I found while flipping through old magazines at my grandma’s house.

Who stood in line for food I wondered? It was then that I learned about Margaret Bourke-White. I may have been a Barbie camera toting little girl, but her images made me think. She soon became my go to power house of feminine strength. Yes, that’s a little lame but I’m not afraid to admit it. I still geek out over chick art, music and books. (I’m a liberal feminist, hear me roar!) I read her biography Portrait of Myself and her voice spoke to me.

She led an amazing life. Traveling the world, documenting World War II, the Great Depression and Gandhi.  She was a trail blazer, photographing in a steel mill, and becoming the first female photographer at Life Magazine. I can only dream of a life as amazing.
